THE RE-FRESH PROJECT

The Re-Fresh Project helps you and everybody else

Food waste is a growing epidemic. Canadians throw out over 31 billion dollars of food annually, with 1/3rd of all food produced being uneaten. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food. A large amount of these losses occur during harvest and in storage, where fruit and vegetables considered to be of lower quality are deemed "seconds" and unfit for sale. More unsalable seconds means lost income for small farmers and an increase in food prices for consumers. Reducing the amount of wasted produce would provide a sizable benefit to our environment and society, which is what the Re-Fresh Program aims to achieve.

Turning useless into waste-less

This symbol represents the use of only locally grown, imperfect produce to create their craft beer.

Local breweries across Canada can communicate their sustainability efforts through the marketing associated with the Re-Fresh Project. Breweries are encouraged to use the "Saved Seconds" imperfect fruit symbol on beer produced through the use of fruit seconds.

The use of this symbol represents the locally-grown, imperfect produce that went into the production of the fruit beer, and will serve as a visible notice to consumers of the brewery's commitment to environmental sustainability.
